Circuit Rules
Updated May 14, 2008

Wisconsin Pork Association Sanctioned Shows

The Wisconsin Pork Association is once again sponsoring an opportunity to showcase Wisconsin’s youth and swine through the WPA Youth Show Circuit.  Wisconsin’s producers have prided themselves on maintaining quality swine herds in light of the industry challenges.  Many youth have rejuvenated their interest in showing swine over the last several years.  Through a show circuit, WPA will connect young producers with established breeders in Wisconsin to continue Wisconsin’s reputation for quality breeding stock.

WPA’s main goal is to provide junior swine exhibitors the opportunity to further their development of citizenship, leadership, and sportsmanship.  The idea behind the junior show circuit is to reward the junior members for the hard work and dedication they give to their swine projects.  We hope to also provide exhibitors guidance in showmanship, selection and project management.

Individuals or organizations interested in hosting a show sanctioned by the Wisconsin Pork Association must abide by the guidelines outlined by the WPA.  WPA is not responsible for injuries or losses sustained at a sanctioned show.

The WPA Seedstock Committee must approve sanctioned sites by March 10.   Sanctioned shows will be required to submit a $50 fee to confirm the date, time and place of the show.  Double headers (two shows held within a 36 hour period at the same show site) will be required to pay $100 for the two combined shows.  The fee also allows for one business card ad in the WPA Headlines newsletter (if time permits with printing date), listing in the calendar of events and online publicity at www.wppa.org.

The WPA office must be informed of results within 4 days of the sanctioned show in order for the points to be recorded.  The judge or judges and show management are required to be listed with the show results so discrepancies can be taken care of in a timely manner.  Results not submitted in a timely manner will forfeit point opportunity for youth.  Complete results must be provided so that all participating individuals points are appropriately awarded.  Electronic results can be e-mailed to wppa@wppa.org.

The WPA office must be informed of results within 1 week of the sanctioned show in order for the points to be recorded.  The judge or judges and show management are required to be listed with the show results so discrepancies can be taken care of in a timely manner.  Results not submitted in a timely manner will forfeit point opportunity.  Complete results must be provided so that all participating individuals points are appropriately awarded.

2008 Rules

  1. Youth must be a paid member of the WI Pork Association
prior to points accumulating towards the show circuit. Youth dues are $25 per individual.
  2. The shows will be preview in format. Shows prior
to June 1 will have maximum animal weights of
210 pounds. Shows past the June 1 date will allow
15 pounds per week of growth; i.e. Spring Preview
will have a 225-pound maximum weight.
  3. Registration papers must be provided by exhibitor
    for animals showing as purebreds.
  4. Individual youth must be present to exhibit their own
animal for their points to accumulate in the show
circuit. For 2008, one show will be dropped from
points consideration for each participating youth.
Therefore, if you are unable to make one show,
that show will not be counted in your overall points.
  5. Gilts will be judged as breeding gilts.
  6. Only Wisconsin residents will be eligible to participate
in the points accumulation for the WPA Show
Circuit. Out of state youth are welcome to exhibit
at Wisconsin shows, but they will not be considered
    for points.
  7. Youth are asked to review biosecurity practices
when exhibiting at shows. They must present a
Certificate of Veterinary Inspection at each show.
Youth should also have their premise registration
number. Participants are encouraged to keep a
movement record of where animals are moved to
    and from.

Requirements

For 2008, shows following the rules outlined below will be refunded the $50 sanctioning fee originally paid to WPA.

  • The show must be open to the public.
  • The WPA Quality Seedstock Committee must approve time, date and location of the show.
  • A Certificate of Insurance must be submitted to the WPA office prior to the show.
  • Each breed will have their own separate classes, regardless of number of animals present for each breed.  Each show can determine breed champion payback, and perhaps base that on $x return if over 5 animals entered, with a lower $ payback if less than five entries per breed.
  • Gilts will not show against barrows.  Shows need to inform the judge that gilts are to be judged as breeding gilts.
  • The show must offer a showmanship class, with the results kept for all individuals competing.
  • Results from the show should be submitted to WPA office at PO Box 327, Lancaster, WI 53813, via fax at (608) 723- 7553, or e-mailed to wppa@wppa.org within 4 days of the show.  Complete results should be submitted, not just the top placing individuals.
    • The hosts of the show are responsible for the running of the show and paying out any premiums.
    • The show will be preview in its format.  Shows prior to June 1 will have maximum animal weights of 210 pounds.  Shows past the June 1 date will allow 15 pounds per week of growth; Spring Preview will have a 225-pound maximum weight.
    • Individual youth must be present to exhibit their own animal for their points to accumulate in the show circuit.   Points from one show will be dropped from each participating exhibors accumulation at the end of the circuit, enabling some flexibility for youth to not have to make it to every show.
    • Registration papers must be provided by exhibitor for animals showing as purebreds.
    • All exhibitors must present a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection upon arrival at the show, prior to unloading animals.
    • Visual check-in of pigs should be completed prior to co-mingling with other animals, by a veterinarian or show management.
    • Show management can and should dismiss pigs showing signs of disease and sickness.
    • Show management reserves the right to make decisions to meet the needs of their show within the WPA guidelines.

    Guidelines for a Sanctioned Show

The guidelines below are provided as reference only for show management to use as a checklist for organizing a successful show.

      • Confirm time, date and location of the show with WPA.
      • Hire judges
      • Submit $50/show with brochure and ad copy (if available)
      • All breeds should have their own breed division.
      • Keep entry fees in the $12 to $20 range per show
      • Any money or merchandise solicited for the top prizes is up to the show host to secure.
      • Shows may consider using the enclosed payback scale.
      • It is recommended that shows offer an educational program, such as a speaker on feeding, biosecurity, careers in the pork industry, or other topic.
      • Running a food stand can make additional money.
      • WPA does not assume any responsibilities associated with losses.
      • WPA will post current point standings on the WPA website.
      • Exhibitors should be certified in the Pork Quality Assurance or Meat Animal Quality Assurance program.

    Award Specifics
WPA members and selected pigs will accumulate points from each show they enter.  Awards will be presented to the top point achievers in each of three showmanship divisions, barrow divisions and the gilt divisions. These members will be recognized at an awards ceremony at the Wisconsin State Fair.

    Breed Groupings:
          Berkshire                Chester Whites Crossbreds
          Duroc                     Hampshire                    Hereford
          Landrace                Poland China                Spots
          Tamworth               Yorkshire

Showmanship prizes and awards will be presented to the top individuals in the following age divisions, based on the member’s age on January 1 of the show season: Novice: 5-8, Junior: 9-12, Intermediate: 13-16, and Senior: 17-21.

    ******2008 Wisconsin-Bred Incentives*****
Each exhibitor who has exhibited a Wisconsin bred animal during the season will be entered into a drawing for a hanging show box, to be given away at the end of the season.

In addition, over $2000 in cash prizes will be awarded to Wisconsin-bred barrow and gilt champions in each breed division.  Cash prizes will be received from breeder sponsorships, and from commissions collected at the 2006 Wisconsin State Fair Open Show Sale of Champions.

    Payback Scale Recommendation

Payback scale based on 100% payback.

$1.00 per head goes to the grand.  (Example – 200 head, the grand champion receives $200.00.)
$0.50 per head for reserve grand
$1.00 per head for breed champion.  (Example – for 45 Hamps, breed champion pays $45.00)
    $0.50 for reserve breed champion
Total of $3.00 taken out of the entry fee to cover grand and reserve overall and breed champions.

Remaining funds can be paid back in the class.  One recommendation is to try to pay on half the class.  Example – if your class had 10 hogs, pay for the top 5 placings.  If the entry fee was $15 per head and $3.00 was subtracted for grand and reserve, you would have $12.00 x 10 head = $120.00 to divide between those 5 placings.

Each individual show may also choose to withhold pre-set dollars to cover expenses of the show – i.e. judge, facility rental, etc.  (Example - $2 per head for expenses/profit.) This payback scale is provided for review only; it is not required for the show to be WPA sanctioned.

    WPA Show Circuit Awards Ceremony
    At the State Fair
Prizes are yet to be determined; however the following awards will be available:
    • Top Point Achiever in each breed or breed grouping for gilts and barrows in the open and youth divisions
    • Top Point Achiever in each Showmanship Age Division
    • One exhibitor exhibiting a Wisconsin-bred animal during the season will be entered into a drawing for a hanging show box, to be given away at the end of the season.
Points will be awarded for class placings as follows:
1st place = 1 pt x number of pigs in class beaten
2nd place = 1 pt x number of pigs in class beaten
3rd place = 1 pt x number of pigs in class beaten
4th place = 1 pt x number of pigs in class beaten
5th place = 1 pt x number of pigs in class beaten
6th place = 1 pt x number of pigs in class beaten
Breed Champions = 10 bonus points
Res. Breed Champions = 5 bonus points
Overall Champions = 10 bonus points
Overall Res. Champions = 5 bonus points
Only one animal per breed per sex can accumulate points for the member. Example: an exhibitor cannot receive points for two Duroc barrows at the same show. To receive points for two barrows or gilts, the member must exhibit two separate breeds.

Showmanship Performance and the Point System
Awards will be given to the top point achievers in showman-ship classes for the following divisions: Novice (ages 5- 8), Junior (ages 9-12), Intermediate (ages 13-16), and Senior (ages 17-21). Ages are as of January 1 of show circuit year.
Points will be awarded for Showmanship placings as follows:
    1st place = 15 points
    2nd place = 10 points
All other participants = 5 points
*Remember that the show’s rules govern the show. The WPA awards points based on how the member places in their showmanship classes, with respect given to the WPA age divisions.
